RELiON Battery Partners with Nonprofit Carolina Raptor Center

January 27, 2022

Today, RELiON Battery, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE:BC), announces its partnership with 1% for the Planet nonprofit organization, Carolina Raptor Center, supporting its mission to educate the public about the importance of raptors in the ecosystem and to rehabilitate injured birds -- most often injured by human interference. RELiON is sponsoring the construction of a new enclosure for Red-Tailed Hawks in the new Raptor Center at Quest nature trail in Latta Nature Preserve. Construction of the enclosure will begin in Spring of 2022 with RELiON employees participating in building the hawks’ new home.

"We are excited to partner with the Raptor Center and to support their mission to inspire engagement in the natural world through the exploration and rehabilitation of birds of prey,” said RELiON Battery CEO Paul Hecimovich. “We are particularly excited to have found a local opportunity as Charlotte, NC, serves as our company headquarters. Our Charlotte-based employees are looking forward to assisting in the build of the new enclosure and supporting our local community.”

Carolina Raptor Center has been rescuing and rehabilitating birds in North Carolina for 40 years. The Jim Arthur Raptor Medical Center now treats 900-1,000 birds a year, releasing 60% back into the wild. The mission of Raptor Center is about more than just rehabilitating injured birds; however, it is also about mending the relationship between people and birds and educating the public about the human impact on these birds and their habitat.

“Many thanks go to the Charlotte-based RELiON team for their financial support of the Raptor Center and investment in their community,” said Jim Warren, Executive Director of the Raptor Center. “Their sweat equity to build the enclosure next Spring, is even more important--we even may say ‘priceless’ -- as we move closer to housing our 40 species of resident birds at the new facility at Quest.”

In 2020, RELiON launched its Limitless Blue campaign and became a 1% for the Planet business member, requiring the company to donate 1% of its sales each year to environmental nonprofits. In the last year, the company has partnered with several organizations in the Carolinas focusing on issues such as food security and ocean conservation. Some highlights include providing funds for needed equipment to Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network so that they could expand their work protecting local dolphins in the Charleston, SC, area. RELiON also partnered with Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) based in Asheville, NC, supporting their school curriculum through the Growing Minds Program.

Carolina Raptor Center began with its first patient, a Broad-winged Hawk, that was brought to Dr. Dick Brown in the basement of the biology building at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 40 years ago. The Raptor Center ignites imaginations and inspires engagement in the natural world through the exploration of birds of prey. The ¾ mile Raptor Trail and the Edna S. Moretti Environmental Education Center are open to the public year-round and welcome more than 35,000 visitors a year. The Raptor Center partnered with Mecklenburg County Park and Rec to create “Quest”, a brand-new nature experience in Latta Nature Preserve. The new Raptor Center at Quest, scheduled to be completed in 2022, will feature 40 bird enclosures with birds from around the world and local to the Carolinas.
