Remote Possibilities

Remote Possibilities

"When we bought our first truck camper, we were really excited to take it on a long trip down Mexico’s Baja peninsula. The camper was perfect in most ways. It had a comfy bed, ample living space for us and our big dog, and even a shower. One thing it did not have was lithium-ion batteries.

In Baja, you explore remote beaches and wild camp on the coast a lot (that’s kind of the point of going). If we kept the lead acid batteries, we would have to lug along a heavy, noisy generator and gas can to meet our electrical needs. These days there are several devices and appliances we enjoy and depend on heavily while traveling, i.e computers, tablets, WiFi, TV / monitor, Instant Pot, Nespresso, etc. Space is at a premium in a truck camper and we have to be mindful to maximize every square inch. Two RELiON InSight 12V lithium batteries sized the same as the lead acid alternatives (GC2) would double our usable capacity (240ah) and weigh almost half as much (70lbs). We also wanted to cook with electricity and rely less on propane, which is a nonrenewable resource and can be hard to find especially in remote, rural Baja. So we knew we needed the high efficiency and robust performance of lithium batteries combined with several hundred watts of solar panels and a DC/DC charger."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can InSight batteries be connected in parallel or series?
RELiON’s InSight batteries were designed exclusively to run in parallel. For starters, each InSight 12V battery is 12 volts. Up to 10 Insight batteries can be connected in parallel, giving you up to 1200 amp-hours. Because they are in parallel, if any one battery goes offline, you will not notice any difference in performance, only duration. A parallel connection extends the reliability of each individual Insight battery to the entire array, giving you more power, more capacity, and less to worry about.
How does the heating element work?
The battery management system monitors the internal temperature of the battery. If the temperature drops below 32°F (0°C) and a charge cycle is initiated, the BMS will divert charge current to the heating element until the uniform internal temperature of the battery is safe for charging. The specific safe charging temperature differs. For small batteries it's 50°F (10°C), for larger batteries it's 41°F (5°C). See individual data sheets for details.
How long does the heating element take to warm the battery to a safe temperature?
Depending on how cold it is and which model of battery, the BMS will divert 5-15 amps of charge current to the heating element. The heating rate for the InSight 12V battery is 5⁰C per hour.
Does the heating element keep the battery warm during discharging also?
No, during discharge the heating element remains off. The battery will function according to the discharge voltage characteristics at various temperatures chart. It is perfectly safe to discharge in temps down to -4°F (-20°C).
How many amps does the heating element draw?
Depending on battery model, the BMS diverts 5-15 amps to power the heating element.
How can I determine the state of charge (SOC) of my InSight battery?
We recommend using a shunt-based fuel gauge to measure SOC with the InSight Battery. This type of fuel gauge accurately measures the discharge/recharge currents and calculates the Ampere-hours (Ah) flowing in and out of the battery. The LEDs on the battery will also indicate the SOC: 95% - 100% Solid Green Solid Green 75% - 95% Solid Green Flashing Green (every ½ sec.) 50% - 75% Solid Green Solid Yellow 30% - 50% Solid Green Flashing Yellow (every ½ sec.) 10% - 30% Solid Green Solid Red 0 - 10% Solid Green Flashing Red (every ½ sec.)
What’s a BMS and what makes InSight’s “SuperSmart”?
RELiON’s batteries are all equipped with an internal Battery Management System which protects against potentially damaging circumstances. The conditions the BMS monitors include over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, short circuit, and cell imbalance. The BMS will disconnect the battery from the circuit if any of these events occur. InSight’s BMS provides precision balancing within a single battery and between batteries in a parallel system without the need for charging batteries individually. InSight’s BMS is constantly updating, so it grows more accurate and stays accurate over the life of the battery. The InSight BMS features a four-layer circuit board measuring 5.75” x 8.625” with an additional heat sink included. The InSight battery features a combined total of 48 charge and discharge metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) that control current flow in and out of the battery.
How do I charge InSight batteries?
It is best to use/select a Lithium, AGM or GEL charge profile in that order of availability. Consult your manual or charger manufacturer for directions on this capability. Spot check the battery SOC LED indicators with a quick press and release of the battery Power Button. Chargers typically display a solid Green Light when the charge is completed, and a flashing green light when the battery is near the end of charge (will vary by charger). Both conditions may or may not occur depending on your charger design. Neither condition is necessarily required to properly achieve a full recharge.
Is there a way to turn the batteries on and off without accessing the battery compartment?
The InSight Series Remote Button gives you the convenience to power on and off your InSight Series batteries without having to access the battery compartment. This high-quality plug-and-play accessory saves you time and energy.
